Yes, this film tells a good story, has good acting, and is beautifully filmed, but it is overlong and becomes tedious. The story of a conscientious objector and outsider in greater Germany during World War II is very similar to 2013's "13 Minutes" which is told in a much tighter, traditional pace. I usually don't even know the director's name when I watch a film, but while watching this one, I couldn't help but notice similarities to the near-great but disappointing "The New World" from 2005. Lo and behold, both were directed by Malick, and both suffer from way too many long pauses in the dialogue. To pan around the countryside to show how idyllic a farm community is might work three or four times, but it happens maybe 25 times. Malick should have cut an hour and added connecting dialogue throughout.

Oh my God! Christmas is coming and yes I'm still single☹️😭. It's one of my favorite movies. Talk about slooooooww burnnnn lol. Also how did I get here cute movie though. This movie to sum it up is miserable. The melancholy just never ends. I felt tortured as the film continued to dwell on the same conflict, never moving forward and there's absolutely no surprises when we find out what happens at the end. This is a 3 hour film full of exposition and pretty cinematography that Malick needs to get over. People - don't be fooled: Malick isn't some messiah artist trying to send a message, he's just a filmmaker that can't get over his pretty cinematography, so he slaps it in the edit and adds some exhausting, irrelevant voice over.
It truly hurts to say this about my once favorite director, but seriously. this was painful.

This is why we need podcasts and film critics. The infinite monkey cage of social media cannot produce conclusions like this. Plus this has saved me hours of trying rationalise my own questions about the film. I wasn't alone. Tions have consequences? I can't be hearing that. I feel I was tortured for 3 hours. I wish they showed why he feels that way. We know from history, but we need to see it from his eyes. The cinematography was great, but it was too slow.

Timothee is legit one of the most beautiful boys I have ever seen. Holy tinkytonk balls! Did I just really hear Mark say Sandler should get an Oscar nomination. The soundtrack to this trailer is absolutely incredible. I'm taking my little sister to watch this. Youre at the beginning but it goes further than ‘existentialism. Remember, malick was on track to being a ‘playboy philosopher. The first to translate Heideggers being in time into English, before giving it all up to pursue film. Hes a prodigy and a polyglot. So the philosopher and the filmmaker are inseparable. So to truly understand malick or begin to understand what he infers through his cinematic avatars (Bale, sheen, Ferrell, caviezel etc.) as they wander awestruck at the world around them you have to consume his diet of philosophy to begin to truly understand. Its not enough to say hes concerned with themes of existentialism and spirituality (I used to think it was) but if you read the ancients and truly appreciate the message of say the republic let alone Heidegger or Wittgenstein, you will understand the inherent absurdity in walking around in a world constructed from ideas. Tables, chairs, cars, pavement even organic matter. We are participating in a manifestation of pure thought and it is stupefying and also hilarious. So you see ‘finding ones place or some kind of ‘meaning in existence is far too complex a question and is not, as presumed, the true aim of these films. Existence, and well refrain from defining what that is in and of itself for that is far too complicated and coded a word or a conversation. Existence in and of itself is absurd and packed enough to marvel at without questioning it or the ids place in it all. Simply put- keep going. But beware, there be sea monsters ahead.
